Report: The Cowboys are interested in the four-time Pro Bowl running back.
The Dallas Cowboys, whose rushing offense has struggled this season, would seem to benefit greatly from the acquisition of a
four-time Pro Bowl running back.
The Cowboys are thinking about signing running back Dalvin Cook, who was released
by the New York Jets on Tuesday.
Regarding signing Cook on Wednesday, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy reportedly remarked, “Those are questions you are always visiting with
and so forth,” as reported by Jon Machota of The Athletic.
“It goes without saying that I have the utmost regard for him; I faced him in several games when Dalvin was in Minnesota.
I hold him in the highest regard.”
Whether or not Cook, 28, has any gas left in the tank is the primary worry. In 15 games with New York, he did not play up to par, averaging a career-
low 3.2 yards per carry with no touchdowns on the ground.
Still, it wouldn’t be just to place the entire blame on him. The Jets’ offensive line was recently ranked as the worst in the league by Pro Football Focus.
Dallas’ offensive line is ranked sixth overall.
The Cowboys backfield needs a someone who can relieve Tony Pollard of some of his workload; they don’t need an explosive player.
He has a career-high 235 carries through 16 games, sixth in the NFL, and it’s wearing him down.
He has also had the lowest yards per carry of his career. With an ankle issue, backup running back Rico Dowdle,
who has averaged 3.9 yards per rush in 15 games, is doubtful.
Cook may not be as good as he once was, but he’s still a valuable back who can provide depth. Dallas (11-5) ought to give him a rough time.
Maintaining Pollard’s durability is also essential for a successful postseason run.
The Cowboys stand a good chance of snapping their 28-year title drought.
FanDuel offers them the third-best Super Bowl odds as of Wednesday (+850).
